Prenatal Singing and Vocalization for Childbirth

Prenatal Singing and Vocalization for Childbirth

Prenatal Singing is a unique method of supporting pregnancy through song, created decades ago by the French singer Marie Louise Aucher.
Marie Louise Aucher explored the immense potential of voice and sound to help individuals develop greater self-awareness and connect with their inner resources to find the balance between body and mind.

She worked with the obstetrician Michel Odent at the maternity hospital in Pithiviers, where she observed the beneficial effects of this technique during pregnancy and childbirth.

Methodologically, this approach combines vocalizations with listening and body awareness exercises, as well as the singing of lullabies and songs specifically created for pregnancy.

It is an invitation to build confidence in their voice and its expressive qualities, experiencing singing as both sound and vibration. By understanding how the baby perceives these sounds from the first weeks of gestation, mothers can enhance communication and bonding with their baby, while also extending this connection to their partner and the rest of the family.

Singing During Labor:

The voice is a powerful NATURAL RESOURCE that allows women to stay present in their bodies during labor, facilitating the increased production of OXYTOCIN (the love hormone) and ENDORPHINS (the well-being hormone). This process helps mothers accompany their baby’s birth with confidence, harmony, and awareness.

The voice supports the birthing process due to the intimate connection between the mouth/throat and the birth canal. By learning to relax the jaw, open the mouth, and emit deep, well-supported, and intentionally directed sounds, women can reflexively relax the cervix and pelvic muscles. This promotes dilation and helps reduce the pain-tension cycle during labor. Integrating this practice allows women to experience childbirth with a greater sense of connection, well-being, and fulfillment.

Aditionally, it allows the partner/companion to support the woman more actively and positively. Accompanying to sonorize the embraces (the “contractions”), massaging the woman’s pelvis with the sound of his voice and being able to live more consciously the birth of their baby.

The baby, in turn, has the opportunity to feel continuously accompanied, enveloped in sound, cradled by the vibration of the voice, and welcomed into the world with a loving song.
