Prenatal Singing and Vocalization for Childbirth

Use your voice to ease labor. A practice rooted in Psychophonie, the work of Marie Louise Aucher and Dr. Michel Odent.

Discover the power of your voice as a natural resource for pregnancy, bonding, and labor.

This unique method is based on the pioneering work of French singer Marie Louise Aucher, who explored the profound connection between sound, body awareness, and mental balance. Developed decades ago alongside the renowned obstetrician Dr. Michel Odent at the Pithiviers maternity hospital, this technique has long been celebrated for its deeply beneficial effects on pregnancy and the birthing process.

The Practice: Pregnancy & Deep Bonding

Our sessions combine gentle vocalizations, body awareness exercises, and the singing of traditional lullabies and specialized pregnancy songs.

  • Experience the Vibration: Build confidence in your voice, experiencing singing not just as sound, but as a physical, grounding vibration.
  • Connect with Your Baby: Babies perceive these rich sounds from the earliest weeks of gestation. This practice enhances early communication and strengthens the emotional bond between mother, baby, partner, and family.

The Physiology: Your Voice During Labor

Your voice is a powerful, natural tool that keeps you anchored in your body during labor, naturally stimulating the production of oxytocin (the love hormone) and endorphins (your body’s natural pain-reliever).

There is an intimate, physiological connection between the mouth/throat and the birth canal:

  • The Vocal-Pelvic Connection: By learning to relax your jaw and open your mouth, you reflexively encourage your cervix and pelvic floor muscles to relax and open.
  • Breaking the Pain-Tension Cycle: Emitting deep, well-supported, and intentionally directed sounds promotes dilation and effectively reduces the pain-tension cycle.
  • Birthing with Harmony: Moving through labor with sound allows you to welcome your baby into the world with confidence, awareness, and profound fulfillment.

For Partners: Active, Sound-Based Support

This practice gives partners a tangible, beautifully active role during labor. Partners will learn how to:

  • Sonorize the Embraces: Accompany and match the rhythm of contractions (the “embraces”) using the grounding power of their own voice.
  • Sound Massages: Use vocal vibrations to soothe and massage the laboring woman’s pelvis.
  • Welcome the Baby: Wrap the newborn in a continuous envelope of familiar sound, cradling them with a loving, welcoming song as they enter the world.
